There are few experiences in New York City that blend refinement, history, and indulgence quite like afternoon tea at Bergdorf Goodman. Located on Fifth Avenue and overlooking the vast expanse of Central Park, this iconic department store is more than a luxury shopping destination, it’s a cultural landmark, a symbol of timeless sophistication, and now, the place of one of my most cherished memories.
Though I’ve dined at Bergdorf’s a couple of times before for lunch, I had never experienced their afternoon tea service until recently. I had the joy of sharing this special afternoon with my daughter-in-law and granddaughter, and it turned out to be one of those picture-perfect occasions you want to tuck away forever.
The setting alone is worth the visit. BG Restaurant, located on the seventh floor, has an elegant dining room with a view that stretches out over Central Park. The ambiance is a perfect balance between glamor and intimacy, with rich décor, soft lighting, and an undeniable sense of opulence.
We were seated at a table with a view, and as the tea service began, it felt as though time slowed down a bit. My daughter-in-law and I decided to elevate the experience even further with glasses of champagne, because what’s more fitting for an elegant afternoon in Manhattan than tea and bubbly, right?
The tea menu at Bergdorf’s is impressive in its variety, offering a wide selection of blends ranging from timeless black teas to floral, herbal, and green teas sourced from around the world. Whether you’re a tea connoisseur or simply someone who appreciates a good cup, the selection is generous. I was especially impressed by the staff’s knowledge of the offerings as they guided us through the menu helping us select teas that suited our tastes.
The tea tower was as beautiful as it was delicious, including delicate finger sandwiches with classic fillings such as cucumber with cream cheese, salmon with caviar and egg salad. Warm scones were served with Devonshire cream and jam, and a decadent selection of fresh pastries that were almost too pretty to eat. Each bite was carefully crafted, and a perfect complement to the tea and champagne. I chose a Roobios tea, blended with essential oils from citrus fruits, which I’d never had before and really enjoyed it. We each got a different tea so we could sample a sip or two from each other.
But what made the experience truly memorable wasn’t just the food or the surroundings, it was sharing it across generations. Watching my granddaughter marvel at the tiny sweets and fancy teapots while enjoying relaxed conversation with the two of them made the afternoon feel like something out of a storybook. It makes all the difference when you take a deep breath, absorb the joyful energy and just be present in the moment.
If you’re planning to go, reservations are certainly a must, especially during the busy holiday season, when the city sparkles and Bergdorf’s takes on an even more magical air. It’s wise to plan well in advance to secure a table and make the most of this unforgettable experience. I reserved a table two weeks in advance and it was the last table they had for that particular day.
High tea at Bergdorf Goodman isn’t just about a meal, it’s about appreciating beauty, tradition, and togetherness in one of the most iconic settings in New York City. Whether you’re celebrating, reconnecting, or simply treating yourself, it’s an experience that lingers long after the last sip. Enjoy!
